Here’s an old favorite that has been modified over time by my family. I love cooking it in the slow cooker. I can basically put everything in the slow cooker and forget it for a few hours and have a meal ready! Perfect.
BBQ “Chicken”
- 1 large onion, chopped
- 1 clove garlic, minced
- 1 28-oz can tomato purée, or a 28-oz can of canned tomatoes, blended with liquid
- 2 tbsp water
- 1/2 cup sucanat
- 1/2 tbsp molasses
- 3/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tbsp parsley
- 1/2 tbsp hickory seasoning, optional
- 1/4 cup lemon juice
- 1 tbsp Bragg’s liquid aminos
- 2-3 cups dry Butler Soy Curls
Place all ingredients in the slow cooker and mix well. Cook on high until onions are cooked through and Butler soy curls are nice and reconstituted and sufficiently marinated. (I generally cook in my slow cooker for about 4-5 hours, but each slow cooker can vary in their cooking times. Watch so edges don’t burn towards the end of the cooking time.)
If you prefer, you can sauté the onion and garlic on the stove top until tender in a little olive oil, and add the other ingredients except soy curls. Bring to a simmer and simmer for about 10 minutes together, stirring frequently. Add soy curls and let them get reconstituted. Cook for an additional 15-20 minutes or so over medium/low heat, being careful that it doesn’t stick or burn.
Enjoy! Serves about 6-8 people as a side dish or 4 people as a main dish.

I don’t have a slow cooker, but I’m printing this out anyway to try on the stovetop because it looks sooo good! I’ll have to sub the soy curls for something else too ’cause I can’t get them here, but I have faith my tum will accept substitutions. Thanks!
